Today we had some very special visitors to our assembly. Two Buddist monks came in to start to introduce us to their religion. It was really interesting to talk about the things that all religions have in common and also the things that are different too.
We learnt that:
- Buddist monks wear the same types of clothes all year round.
- The orange colour of their robes comes from a dye made from tree bark that also acts as an insect repellent!
- Buddism teaches respect and peace to all people.
- Buddists have special celebrations like Christians.
Father Mark also commented that the reason both he and the monks wore one colour so that people were not distractedfrom listening to their message by looking at their clothes.
We’re really looking forward to seeing the monks again soom and finding out more about their religion.

9 children from year 6 have recently spent a day with Mark and Tony from Salford Sailing Club based at Pennington Flash. They alerted Year 6 to the dangers of playing near water. There are many reports of children (mainly boys) who get into difficulties in water and sometimes pay for this with their lives. A great day out with a very useful purpose. This was a really good example of The Police and our Local Authority playing a proactive role in preventing loss of life by using their resources to best effect. Thanks to the BOYS and to Mrs Royle for supporting the trip. Excellent behaviour from Year 6!!
Year 2 enjoyed a super trip to the seaside. It was just like I remember from my childhood; sand between the toes, Punch and Judy, Kamikaze seagulls trying to pinch our sandwiches (they were successful in the case of John’s Sausage and Mrs Batty’s ice cream), a walk on the pier and ice creams for all. Thanks to Mrs Batty for organising it all and to John and Miss Turner for supporting the trip.
Year 6 are busy reconstructing dinosaurs as a timed challenge. John, our caretaker used our new jigsaw to cut out the pieces from MDF using a template. It took him ages! The children have worked collaboratively to follow a set of instructions and create a model dinosaur. The best time so far is just under 25 minutes.
I just had to include this picture of Mrs Jones! How she managed to walk in those enormous flippers I don’t know!
