Monks come to Charlestown December 7, 2009

Today we had some very special visitors to our assembly.   Two Buddist monks came in to start to introduce us to their religion.   It was really interesting to talk about the things that all religions have in common and also the things that are different too.

We learnt that:

• Buddist monks wear the same types of clothes all year round.
• The orange colour of their robes comes from a dye made from tree bark that also acts as an insect repellent!
• Buddism teaches respect and peace to all people.
• Buddists have special celebrations like Christians.

Father Mark also commented that the reason both he and the monks wore one colour so that people were not distractedfrom listening to their message by looking at their clothes.

We’re really looking forward to seeing the monks again soom and finding out more about their religion.

Parent Council November 18, 2009

We had our first Parent Council meeting on Friday, 13th November, 2009.  At the moment, we have four Parent Representatives – Gemma Brookes-Ryan, Helen Hepburn, Elina Parker and Kapila Wickramarachchi – together with myself, Sue Jones.

The Reps. want to be able to reach out to parents so that we can find out the issues that are concerning you about any aspect of school life and then to present these issues to the School Governors and the Management Team.

We are starting a ‘Drop-in’ facility this Friday (20th, November) at 8.45 a.m. to 9.30 a.m. whereby parents can come and have a chat to us.  We have also made a Suggestion Box, where suggestions may be entered into it (by post, email) so that parents can remain anonymous if they wish to.

We will also be getting involved in fund-raising activities.

We welcome any parent/carer to become a member of the Parent Council.  If you wish to join the team, please contact Mrs Jones at school.

We would welcome your comments and feedback relating to the Parent Council and it’s future developments.

Reception Parents SHARE Learning October 14, 2009

Parents of childern in our Reception class came in to school today for the second SHARE session. It was led by Mrs Allcock and Mrs Jones. The children made ‘feely boxes’ out of shoe boxes and pieces of material. Everybody had fun and it was great to see parents and children working together.

Give your old shoes extra time. October 9, 2009

 

 

Can you imagine running around barefoot on hard, dusty ground? Well, that’s the reality for millions of African children who can’t afford new shoes.

Everyone at at school  has been working hard to collect shoes for Shoe Aid for Africa. Your old pumps or trainers may no longer fit you but for the children of Africa they could be a welome gift. Such a small gesture raelly can  make a BIG difference. Thanks to all of you who have already brought in shoes like; Macualey, Parmiss and Chelsie from year 3 (pictured above) and for those of you who haven’t had chance yet there are still a few day left. Don’t forget, adult shoes are welcome too.  I want to see those boxes overflowing!

Christmas Carol Service September 2, 2009

We are going to have a Traditional Carol Service at Pendleton Church on Friday 18th December. We haven’t done this before so it’s a first! We will be inviting the whole community. We will have some traditional Christmas readings, Carols and additional items all performed by the children.

Slow down and BRAKE! June 17, 2009

In support of the campaign group ‘Brake’ we walked around the field today as a school. Our banner urged drivers to slow down to 20 mph in built up areas and around schools as a means of saving lives in any future accidents. It was wet and windy and our banner got a little soggy!

Calling all Bronze Credit Card Holders May 18, 2009

There will be a non uniform day for all bronze credit card holders on Friday 22nd May. As long as you can produce your bronze credit card you may wear your own clothes.

Here at Charlestown we place a great deal of emphasis on rewarding the good things that our children do. At every opportunity we are making a point of celebrating good work, behaviour, progress or even good manners no matter how small.  It is part of our behaviour policy to regularly reward this sort of effort through a system of stickers which are traded for credit cards. We believe that consistent positive reinforcement of this kind really does matter and shows that we value what our children do, building a cohesive community of learners.

Amazingly our school blog has now recieved over one thousand hits since it started!   A massive thanks to everyone who has visited, commented and contributed to the blog, it is really becoming an important part of our school life – long may it continue.

‘Lets Cook Together’ January 30, 2009

Every Friday of four weeks parents and children are invited to cook together in the community wing at school.   They learn about healthy foods, cooking on a budget and try tasty new recepies.   Everybody then eats their food together and discuss what they like about it and how they created it.

The last of the sessions is next week, but there is another course starting on the 13th of March.   Anyone interested should contact school or Sarah at Family First.

CSI comes to Charlestown January 15, 2009

Today we all had a rather different type of morning! PCSO Fullerton came in to talk to us about crime prevention. We all got to take our own fingerprints too! It was extremely messy, but great fun.
Some of us even got to dress up in crime scene suits.
